BCC HS Expansion Notes. Meeting 3

said on November 14th, 2012 filed under: Bethesda, Chevy Chase

Confession.  Work made a pesky appearance and I was 15 minutes late for the meeting.  Alas, I seem not to have missed much.  The meetings, I’ve noticed, tend to build on each other and there is a fair amount of repetition.

Some of the newer items raised include:

  • spectator space for the tennis courts… Architects said they would look into it.
  • Neighboring properties.  More than one attendee has suggested that we (the county/school board) purchase the adjoining parking lot, currently owned by Our Lady of Lourdes via eminent domain.  While this is a school board issue, it has been suggested that the process would be time consuming, combative, expensive and prone to law suit. Currently, there exists an informal but very friendly relationship with the church for over-flow parking purposes during special events.
  • Participants asked for pros and cons regarding the 4 options.  This will be addressed during the next work session on November 28 at 7pm, though it was hinted that Options A&B were likely to be the least disruptive and the most cost effective.
  • The PTSA will be seeking some input from Chris Garran, principal at Walter Johnson HS- a school with a current capacity for 2,400 students.
  • Assuming that funding is approved, we can expect a similar set of meetings for the design phase, presumably to begin next Fall (’13).
  • Design will take roughly 1.5 years.  Construction will take about 2 years.

That’s all!

East Bethesda MD 20814 Homes for Sale 11/9/12

said on November 9th, 2012 filed under: Bethesda

Update for 11/9/2012. After last weeks flurry of new listings, we’ve got nothing new this week. Two under contract.. And one price drop.

All the homes in this article are currently for sale within East Bethesda. The top of the list features the newest listings, while the bottom showcases those that have been on the market for quite some time. I’ll be updating this post every Friday, so be sure to check back to see what’s new, what’s gone, & what might be coming (and check out the date up top… if it’s not current, neither is this information!). I’ve lived in East Bethesda for over 17 years. I’ve sold real estate in East Bethesda for over 12 years. It’s a wonderful neighborhood within walking distance of two metro stops AND downtown Bethesda. While all of this information is available to you on the various search engines (and please keep in mind that these are not all of my own listings), I’ve taken the time to inject my opinion on the condition, pricing, and likelihood of each property selling… or not. I hope you’ll give me a call if you have any questions. I have loved living here over the years, and I want to share it with other enthusiastic people!

When the Nights Get Longer…

said on November 3rd, 2012 filed under: Just For Fun

Spring ForwardMy husband is thrilled about gaining an hour this weekend. I’m grumbling because it brings darkness at an earlier hour.

It happens twice a year… this shifting of the clock. In the spring we lose an hour… in the winter we gain an hour. It all takes place at 2 a.m. Sunday.

Some people have a really hard time adjusting to the change, and they say that young kids are most affected. Though it’s a little late to be giving out advice, experts (and I’d like to know… who are these clock changing experts?) suggest a gradual adjustment in bed times 3-4 days before the change takes place, in 10-20 minute increments. That gives the body some time to adjust.

If you choose to go cold turkey, things should even out in 2-3 days.

Happy Fall!

BCC HS Expansion Notes. Meeting 2

said on October 25th, 2012 filed under: Bethesda, Chevy Chase

The second in a series of four Feasibility studies took place on Tuesday, October 23, 2012 at 7pm in the Bethesda Chevy Chase High School cafeteria.  The meeting kicked off with some facts and figures by the director of the Division of Long Range Planning, Bruce Crispell.

  • Since 2007, the Montgomery County student population has increased by 11,000 students.
  • 10,000 of those students are at the elementary school level.
  • Within the BCC cluster, there has been an increase of 700 elementary school students since 2007.
  • Projections go out year-by-year for 6 years.  They can also go out 10 and 15 years.  Demographers expect a peak and plateau of the student population during upcoming cycles.

To address the overcrowding, Montgomery County will be adding 1,200 more elementary school seats within the BCC cluster by 2015.  In order to avoid any boundary changes, it’s necessary to expand the existing schools to a larger size. There are no more holding schools. Land is scarce and Read the rest of this entry »

BCC HS Expansion Notes. Meeting 1

said on October 17th, 2012 filed under: Bethesda, Chevy Chase

On October 9, 2012 I attended a meeting at Bethesda Chevy Chase High School for the first of 5 Feasibility/Work Sessions having to do with the proposed expansion.

For starters, you can link to notes on the BCC Expansion here.

At the meeting were Karen Lockard (Principal), James Tokar (Structural Engineer and Director of Construction for Mont. Co. Schools), and Debbie Szyfer (Education Specialist/Planner) and representatives from Smolen-Emr-Ilkovitch Architects.

Here’s the skinny:

  • BCC HS has a capacity for 1,640 – 1,650 children.
  • Enrollment today is at 1,870 children.  Over the next several years, enrollment is expected to surpass 2,000 students.
  • The goal for the expansion is to emerge with a school that has a capacity for Read the rest of this entry »

The Evers & Co. September 2012 Real Estate Report

said on October 15th, 2012 filed under: State of the Market

We are looking at a continuation of a genuine recovery, with some of the strongest numbers we’ve seen all year, led by a 14% increase in dollar volume of sales over September 2011, in the close-in Metro area. Average price was up a full 5% and days on the market down 18.5%. Contrary to earlier fears about a shadow inventory as a result of foreclosures emerging and slowing the market, the Washington Metro marketplace continues to see just the opposite- low inventory which is pushing prices up.

Across the country, the shadow inventory dropped 10% in July 2012, compared to July 2011. For the 11th month in a row, Fannie Mae surveys show that Americans are positive about the housing market and expect prices to go up.

*Statistics are taken from the Metropolitan Regional Information System for three areas: Washington, D.C.; Montgomery County, Maryland; and Fairfax County, Arlington and Alexandria in Virginia.
